Default Third Gear Grind

I took my car to the dealer yesterday. They got it to repeat the problem I described many times. What happens is When shifting normal, third gear will grind. If i think about it and wait like 1 to 1.5 seconds to shift to third i can drive all day and not grind the gears but if i do not wait the gear will grind everytime no matter what RPM i am at. The dealer said they needed to call honda to see what to do. I called them back and they told me some stuff about clutch parts needing to be replaced??? From what i have read on all the boards is Syncros being the problem. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND IF SO WHAT WAS YOUR FIX?? Most of what i have read was with second gear. By the way it is a 2002 Suzuka Blue S2000 with like 32000 miles on it. I bought this car used. Any and all replies will be helpfull.

It sounds to me like a synchro problem. If it was a clutch issue you'd likely have problems with multiple gears. If a synchro is damaged the only fix is going to be yanking the tranny to replace the faulty parts.

Thanks for the reply that's what i was thinking too. I will call and get more info when i talk directly to the Mech that will repair the car. It also has to get the spark plug recall done at the same time. Gee wiz I just want to enjoy the drive.

Just a suggestion, have the mechanic bleed the clutch and take it for another drive. Make sure you are pressing the clutch pedal in all the way. If it still grinds in third, then you are looking at a warranty issue.

I have similar problems... except gears 2-4 feel like they 'catch' a little bit on the synchros before getting into gear when upshifting. It does get a little better as the car warms up. I seriously doubt all synchros would be bad after only 23k miles. I plan on changing my differential fluid, tranny fluid, and clutch fluid this weekend to see if that helps. If that doesn't do it it's going to the dealer for the clutch TSB and I'll complain about the tranny.

I test drove a S2K last night and noticed a slight 'catch' in third gear. It's done 29,000 miles on a V plate.

Is this something that will punish me if I buy it.

Any advice gratefully received.

Hello all
Well My car is in the shop and guess what the third gear syncro is being replaced. i had to call twice because the service guy didn't know and had to ask the tech what was being done. at first he told me something about the clutch. So if you are having the grind in third more then likely it is the syncro. I will let you ladies and gents know what the finial results are once i pick the car up tomorrow. This should fix my problem. Also they are doing the spark plug recall on mine. I hope this helps someone.

I get a bit of catching as well just third gear, a few less milrs on mine but not much.
are you paying for the work or are they doing it as a warranty thing?
Did it start off small and build up or was it all of a sudden bad?
cause it seems like a hell of a lot of work to fix and I could live with it in it's current state if the money was gonna come out of my pocket to fix it.
but if gets the warranty nod of approval, I would probably take mine in too.

The grinds always boil down to 3 things

1.)Fluids (clutch, trans)
2.)Clutch assembly
3.)Synchros

That should be the order of repair, to test for faulty hardware.

Yes it is covered under warrenty. If your car is less then 3yrs and i think 36,000miles then you should be good or if you have the extended plan. What I think is going on is instead of sending out a recall on the syncros since this problems seems to plege a few of us. It is cheaper to fix them as they come instead of fixing like 10,000 compared to 300. You know what I mean. It all boils down to what is the cheapest. Because I have driven my friends S2k and his has none of the trans stuff wrong. I'll be happy as long as it drives the way it is supposed too. Remember having a car like this is no need to live with some thing that is not supposed to be in the first place.
