Reporting the crank hp is a marketing gimic. It sounds much cooler saying our car has 240hp than it does saying 200. That is why all car companies do it.

Like you said most people don't know the difference so why not tell them what they want to hear...right?

HP was originally qouted in brake horsepower and in 1971 it went to a "net" rating. Does anyone know what the difference is? I think that manufacturers should qoute the net rating as well as the wheel rating.

Guys as much as i agree with you, the general public likes simple things, if you overcomplicate anything your only achievement will be to confuse them even more.

In reality, they should quote average and peak "wheel torque" and provide a graph to give the best image of a cars performance.

However, simple peak crank HP ratings is allready beyond most peoples understanding level.
