Thumping sound when engaging 1st gear.
I get this kinda knock thumping sound every time I engage 1st gear, like something falls in to place but has a hard time doing so. Is that normal in s2ks I have an 05 with 20000 mi on it. Is really annoying.
Thanks in advance

I agree, you guys really know your stuff..Thanks for the info guys..I'll give that a shot, but I still find it odd b/c I've never experienced this with any of my other Honda's before..Good to know that I can avoid this now..Thanks!

FWD cars usually have the engine & gearbox east-west, and therefore usually have bowden cables connecting the shifter to the gearbox.
Those cables make the shifting less "mechanical" but do smoothen out the process of shifting, IOW you select a gear less fast and more smooth.
It gives the synchro the time to do its work a little longer.
The shifter in the S2000 is right at the top end of the gearbox and the shift rods are metal, no flex, no smoothing and directly connected to the shift forks.
You push the shifter forward to select first its going to do that immidiately.
Clunck!
Btw
.. there are some gear pairs (1st, 2nd & reverse) & synchro's spinning too in neutral.
All that mass has to be stopped and 1st being the "strongest" gear forward gives the most clunck in the drive line.
