Default timing chain

has anyone seen a timing chain fail on an s2k? if so how many miles.
i was just talking with hockey, and he has 135 K, and i had advised him we should do his before it breaks. then i wondered how many have honestly broken. they wont last forever, i can tell ya that. but hondas are amazing. so the question has been asked. lets see what comes about.

Haven't seen one break on a F20C-F22C or a K20-K24. Seen several S2k's over 120K, and motored Accords over 180K

The only time I've ever heard of a timing chain breaking is from a bad tensioner install... or just a bad tensioner.

Hello All,
Unfortunately I've had a failure of my timing chain . I noticed a "buzz" upon start up and at low rpms. What was happening was that my timing chain was losing tension over time. It would be ok at first, then get worse and worse. The dealer replaced the timing chain, tensioner and guide under warranty and performed a full valve adjustment as well...since they needed to take the head off. Upon inspection they found no damage to any components or evidence of over revving. They could not explain why it occured so early (at approx 35k miles); however it's all repaired and better than new now

Regards,
Christopher

Edit: 26-Oct:
All,
When I had my rattle I took it to the dealer for analysis. The dealer said this was a failure of my timing chain...their words, not mine. At which time they replaced the chain, tensioner and guide. There was no money out of pocket becuse there was no damage from me and the car was under extended warranty.

I am not diagnoising anyone else's issues; just giving my personal account which may/may not be similar to yours.

Christopher

That buzz your referring to is because of a bad tensioner... NOT a bad timing chain. All they had to do was a 15 minute replacement of the tensioner. This is a pretty well documented issue here on the boards, and I had to replace mine about 10k miles ago (35k miles on the car).

Yep...never heard of a timing chain failing... I concure, I have heard of tensioners failing once in a blue moon but that's not so bad.
