the only real reason i could see our chain lasting longer than most, is do to the design. the F20/22 chain runs off the crank then to a drive gear, that then turns both cams. so its like a reduction. the chain never takes the camshaft harmonics that other chains do. so it is likely to last longer. BUT, this doesnt mean it wont break.

Of course there are always exceptions, but a timing chain is not a replacement item.
and yes, it is. use history as your guide. ask any motorcycle guy, how many chains they've replaced. or, as ive stated, how many VR6 chains, and yota chains, and nissan chains, have i seen fail. MANY. so im being careful, and would be comfy knowing that i had a new chain every 100k. thats a lot of service your car has given you, for the small price of a chain replacement.
and yeah, if you drive like an old granny, and rarely VTEC, then your chain is happy till 180k. but if you drive in vtec with the wheels spinning, 75% of the time like i do. then your chain has far more miles than a normal car. get me. later dave

ok, back from the dead

the link to "Timing Chain Tensioner Removal & Replace thread:" dont work.

second MY00 has the buzz for 2sec after startup(only when its cold). So i'm guessing the tensioner is going dead or is dead(maybe??).

Long story short, 1: how much longer will it last if i leave it alone. 2: is there an actual thread in replacing one?? 3: i dont have money to give my mechanic but i do know how to change a timing belt and a head gasket, so should i proceed the removal/install???

I'll PM a mod to ask them to update the link in the FAQ.

Chain replacement is very involved.

TCT is easy as changing a tire

Bump.

My timing chain snapped at 95K miles. I'd changed the tensioner about a year before, and that made the engine a lot quieter, but the noise was starting to come back. No buzzes I was aware of though.

Who knows? I did over-rev it once, but 2 years before it blew. And when it did fail, the car just stopped. No bangs or smoke or anything to suggest anything catastrophic.

I also want to say that you can replace the timing chain without removing the head.

My TCT failed @ 110k and took the timing chain with it. Couldn't hear engine noise over the exhaust.
