Default Timing Chain Tension

I have seen the photos of the dismantled S2000 engine but cannot tell what mechanism is used for maintaining proper tension on the timing chain. Does anyone know if there is a timing chain tensioner, and if so, how it works (spring? oil pressure?).

I am curious if an out-of-spec timing chain could cause the same problems as over-revving, i.e., valves striking the tops of the pistons.

I am wondering if you could have a situation where the car would seem to be running OK until you missed an up-shift and lugged the engine. Under such a situation could a slack tensioner create a sufficiently loose to permit the pistons and valves to come into contact.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

The timing chain system is strictly mechanical. It is composed of a tension arm and pivot point only.
