What everyone is saying though is this isn't a safe place to experiment.

Its not just about getting it wrong, but simply not getting it right can easily destroy your engine. See Billman post.

We couldn't in good conscience not strongly recommend the proven solution that can just be purchased off the shelf.
Ok fair point, obviously there is more scope for error when working on something like this so the safer option is definitely going for something tried and tested. I'm just giving another viewpoint that obviously isn't the general consensus, I appreciate you don't want to be giving bad advice that could lead to someone damaging something but some may have had success doing it a different way. For some even doing the TCT change themselves would be too much risk!

At one point in time, there was a bunch of diy going on with homebrew tct fixes. Sandblasting, etc. People posting what they tried, and their results. Then someone else combines what others have done, improves upon it, etc.

Then the Billman tct became available, and all the diy experimentation stopped almost overnight.

Peoples goal with their experimentation was to come up with a permanent fix for the community, and themselves. Billman accomplished that, so there wasn't a need to reinvent that wheel.
