timing gear teeth
anyone ever notice how the timing gears on our cars seem to ahve 2 sets of teeth cut into them? one set is about 3/4ths of the way deep and the other set is the remaining quarter? anyone know why that is?

it's not herringbone, that looks like this: <<<<<<<< from the side, or this image
they are scissor gears, which are used on all timing chain engines these days. There is a spring inside which forces them away from each other to a certain degree. The idea, as Strat correctly pointed out, is to reduce noise in the chain system by minimizing slop.

I guess the correct technical name for them is: anti backlash gears.
And this is what the insides look like:

This is a pretty simple & effective design.
It uses a circular spring, it looks a lot like a big circlip.
The gear with the spring is the main gear, the one on the right is the anti backlash gear.
In the bottom left picture you see how much the two gears are able to move and make the teeth look misaligned.
The bottom right picture shows how they look like when the gears teeth align.
(without the spring installed)
P.S. I have not managed to put them back together again as the spring is pretty strong.
Therefore I can not drive my car.....
J/K.
