Default tips on replacing fuel rail

Hey guys, I will be replacing my stock fuel rail tomorrow with a stock polished fuel rail with a fuel pressure gauge already tapped into it and I would appreciate any tips on this process.

To relieve the fuel pressure, I think I only need to remove the gas cap correct?

Also, is there a trick to removing the FPR and the pulsation dampener? Should I take the dampener and FPR off the rail before I remove the rail from the infectors?

I would appreciate any help.

thanks!

Rich

Cover the dampener with a shop rag while you unscrew it. The fuel pressure will be released and gas will spill into the rag. So yes, you should take off the dampener first.

Thanks Stratocaster! Should I unscrew the phillips screw under the plastic cover or the star screws that connect it to the fuel rail.

Any other suggestions..

Gas will spill everywhere. Make sure you use a rag you can throw away. It'll vent when you disconnect the fuel line.

I think it would be easier to remove the fuel pressure regulator while the fuel rail is still bolted to the engine. Otherwise it may be more difficult to loosen the regulator and hold on to the fuel rail at the same time. The bolts and nuts on the fuel rail should be torqued to 12 N-m (8.7 lb-ft).

I've removed my fuel rail when I had a leaking injector o-ring, but I've never had to remove the pressure regulator.

No. leave that alone. Just unscrew the whole thing.

Cool, and after that is off just take the FPR off and unbolt the fuel rail. I also know to oil the injector O rings. Is that pretty much it?

Couldn't do it. I couldn't even get the star shaped screws out that holds the fuel dampener in. I stripped out the first screw. So I cut a slit in the screw and tried to take it out using an 18 volt impact drill and a flat blade bit, broke two bits!! What the hell kind of torque are those things tightened too??? Are they reverse threaded? So, I didn't mess with the other screw much, because I didn't want to strip it too. That was rediculous! I think I am just going to take it to a shop specializing in Hondas. They put my brake rotors on. I just hate not doing the work myself.

What did I do wrong?

OK...gotta say I'm confused. Strat said not to mess with the star screws and you did anyway??

The dampner comes off with a 22mm wrench.

BTW...there are a couple of washers that you might be able to reuse, but sometimes they will leak if reused. If you get a fuel leak around the dampner, then order these two washers:

16705-PD1-003

90428-PD6-003

You might want to connect with some of the locals in the Carolina crew. Several are pretty handy and would probably be willing to lend a hand with this kind of thing. The fuel rail is pretty easy...so I'm sure a local would be willing to lend a hand.

Oh lord I feel like an idiot!!! I thought Strato meant to not mess with the little phillips head screw under the plastic cap on the dampener! I know you guys must think I am an idiot and I would completely understand. I've actually done all the work on my car, except the brake rotors. I did the entire turbo kit myself.

I have one question if you don't remove the star screws. The dampener sits on a little flange that the star screws hold down and my new fuel rail doesn't have that. How do you get that flange off to put on the new fuel rail. I am taking pics right now!

Thank you so much for all of your guys help on what seems like a very simple task.

Rich

Pics...

old and new fuel rails

I see the threaded nipple that the dampener screws onto

Here is the bronze colored bracket that the star screws are holding on.

I assume the 2.0 liter fuel rails and 2.2 liter fuel rails aren't any different? Notice that there aren't any holes beside the fuel dampener nipple that the star screws would screw into. that bronze bracket has me puzzled.

I see that Negcamber has an AP1 and he doesn't seem to have this misterious bronze bracket with those damn star screws!!

It is snowing like crazy so I shouldn't have work tomorrow. I will take the dampener off, but I wonder if I can't just put the dampener back on without that bracket.

Please help the idiot guys!!!
