Transmission
Hi Guys, I took my buddy who is a mechanic for a ride in my 2000 S2K. It has 50k miles on it and just got new plugs via the recall.
There is some noise (loose metal...gargling sound) that he says is coming from the transmission. He thinks it the input shaft bearings on the tranny are bad. Has anyone experienced this before? Can these be replaced without having to replace the whole tranny. I just drove it 1000 miles this weekend with no issues other than the noise coming from the tranny area.
Thanks

The sound is like a can filled with marbles. It is louder in the cockpit than standing near the engine area. It gets faster and louder with throttle.
My mechanic suspects its coming from the tranny. Input bearings are worn/loose
I don't recall any posts about transmission bearing failures, but there are plenty regarding noise from the clutch. Unless your bud is very familiar with an unusual S2000 issue I would guess he is off base on this one. Get with an S2000 mechanic to see, but the guess would be FD noise that is common in the cars, especially ones with the early clutch parts.
Thanks cdelena...I have booked a test drive with a local s2000 specialist. I was a little skeptical about his diagnosis since I found few, if any issues regarding these failures in the S2K.
I'll update the post later

To try narrow down source of problem online or with your mechanic, especially when transmission is suspected, note how the noise goes with:
- throttle on/off
- gear in/out
- clutch in/out
- engine speed/road speed
and all of the above combination.

OK ...get this. I took the car to Speedstar. My local S2000 specialist to find out what this noise is that my mechanic and the dealer couldn't figure out. It turned out that the A$$ who changed the oil last dropped the oil filler cap and it landed on top top the tranny bay. Instead of getting it out he just replaced it with a new one. THAT's what was making the aweful noises near my tranny. After several test drives and jacking the car up several times problem solved. The tech Albert needed to drop the tranny just to get to the part and only charged me $50! If you live in the GTA then Speedstar is the place to repair or upgrade your S2000. Honest and good techs are hard to find!! These guys know how to treat customers!
