Would be interested to hear what some of the talented folks on here say. I've rebuilt an engine a couple of times but a trans seems so much more daunting that I've never had the balls to open one up.

In my head, I'd want LOTS of bench space just to keep everything organized. Mark each piece consistently on one side with a sharpie so you know which side goes where. A good set of calipers to check tolerances.

You may want to search threads with comments by Billman. I recall seeing numerous tips and tricks concerning the transmission over the years.

I was considering on rebuilding mines at one point. But I don’t have all the knowledge or necessary special tools for it; so I bought a fully rebuilt one instead lol.

This guy’s video may help ya.

If you just follow the manual it's a doddle - the most difficult part is tightening the bearings to spec without the special tool - I put the input shaft in a lathe (with soft jaws) had 2 mates with me (one to hold the lathe Chuck still and the other holding the gearbox still) whilst I tightened up one of the bearings to spec. Not sure exactly how important it is but you should probably replace the crush tubes (there's one in the diff, think there's one in the box)

Default Day 1

Ok so I followed the book so far however I’ve decided to rebuild it by section starting with the back half. I got it torn down to pressing the shaft out . The only hurtle so far was getting the output flange to stay put when taking the nut off. I used the extra axle bolts from when I put the spacers in same thread and they worked beautifully and gave me some leverage
