The engine doesn't really care how the air is compressed. It cares a great deal, however, about the pressure and temperature of the intake charge...

Heat is the enemy, which is why many an intercooler is so desirable. The higher the pressure, typically the higher the heat, and the greater chance of engine-wrecking detonation.

Most arguments about turbo- vs. super- chargers are about lag, parasitic loss, maximum power gain, etc., not about engine life.

As was said before, the quality and engineering of the system matter much more than the base technology...
