Default two sounds

Hey guys,

I figured I'd endear myself right away if I start out with some "what's this sound" threads!

Truthfully, I hate having to ask these questions, but I figured there's probably no better place to ask.

1. A single, loud click, maybe every 30 seconds while sitting at a stoplight. Almost sounds like the AC turning on (which isn't the case, of course)...anyone have this? anything to worry about?

2. A crackling as it warms up. Sounds like valves, but not regular, starts about 5 seconds after startup until about "2 clicks" on the temp gauge. Ideas? Just a warming up sound?

Any input appreciated!

Thanks,
Dave

Warming up and cooling down "clicks" come from the exhaust. After 10-20 minutes of driving the sounds should stop.

Hi smyroad,

Thanks for the response. I know what you're talking about (the cool-down exhaust tick), but these are something else. The "crackling" is clearly coming from the motor, and only happens in the first few minutes after starting.

I have no reason to doubt the the quality of the work, and the cars feels great...but the engine is still so noisy (mostly when the engine sound "ricochets" off other cars, walls, etc., though) It's a constant "ftftftftf"... Does the S2K just have extremely noisy valves?

Any thoughts?

Or maybe, is there anybody in the SoCal area willing to meet up and give my car a quick listen sometime? I just want to make sure the noisy-ness is normal...

Well, the "click" (symptom #1) I've only heard while sitting at a stoplight, idling in neutral. It sounds exactly like a/c switching on. It may be happening the whole time, but I don't hear it.

If you're hearing ticking after you shut the car off, I'd guess it's just the exhaust "settling", as smyroad said.

i think the loud click noise comes from turning on the fan... i notice whever fan turns on, it makes noise click then fan would start turning.

Anyone? Does the S2K just have noisy valves? When the sound bounces of a wall, car, etc. beside me, it's really irritating and distracting. Is this normal?

The car feels great, but I've never heard an engine this noisy. (Anyone in SoCal willing to take a quick listen?)

you can't trust any sound bouncing off a wall. that is a horrible way to diagnose as its no where near a true representation of the noise.

the S does have a noisy valve train and noisy injectors so it may be normal. The only way to tell for sure is to have someone else listen.

"ftftftft" to me sounds like the timing chain auto tensioner.. aka card in the spokes of a bike wheel.
