Default Valve adjustment

Hi, I took my new 2008 S2000 (with 8,000 mi) for service for the first time yesterday. I took it to the dealership (maybe a bad idea, but I had no better alternative). I asked if I should get the valves adjusted... and of course they said yes.

I have 2 questions:

1. How necessary is this?

2. They charged me $100, does that seem right!

Thanks

I would have waited personally. What were the findings?

Why did you take it to the dealer in the first place?

Also, make sure they do it while the engine isn't warm or hot. Stone cold would be the ideal setting.

Another incompetent dealer.

Valve seats are not done breaking in. Your clearances will continue to close until the seats are in a high state of polish. So now your new settings will close to a dangerous level and possibly burn the valves. Valve seat break in happens at a greater spectrum than an AP1 car.

Minimum is 10k for a valve adjustment.

The mechanic said that owned 2 s2000s, he appeared to know what he was talking about.

So Billman, now what do reccomend that I do? Get them readjusted at 10k? Does the price at least seem reasonable?

Thanks

the price is very reasonable if done by a competent person. what scares me is the service manual says your good for 100k... to have someone tell you it needed to be done at 8k sounds like he just wanted an easy $100 bonus. most people wait til at least 50k miles.

I'd check again at 20k, make sure none have tightened up.

I have seen this first hand with early VAs. They are loose from the factory for a reason.

Thanks Billmam! I'll check again at 20k. I might ask for a refund too. I appreciate your input as I'm sure everyone here does!
