Default Valve clatter or an injector?

All,

Just reset the valve clearances for a second time on my ‘05; heard a valve clatter after the first attempt, so just rechecked them. Per the Honda Service Manual, set the Intakes at .008”, Exhausts at .010”. Still getting a tapping noise when the engine warms up. Used a stethoscope to narrow down the area of the noise, seems like a #3 intake valve. However, a placed the probe on the injector, and the noise seemed louder. So, did a missed a valve clearance, or is an injector starting to fail? Car has just 18,500 miles on it.

Thanks,

John

Is the noise near cylinder #1? Does it come and go while idling? Could be your timing chain tensioner read up on the symptoms.

No the noise definetly not coming from the front of the engine. Middle of the head, intake side, loudest near #3 Injector.

With that low mileage the TCT should still be near new condition.

Since your mileage is that low and the car is 13 years old could it be that it stood still, un-driven for a very long period of time? If that is the case then whatever fuel was in the tank would have gummed up causing the lines and/or injector/s to get clogged up. Running a bottle of good fuel system cleaner is inexpensive and definitely worth a try before replacing an injector/s

Did the clatter start to happen after the first VC adjustment? How was the initial VC, are they out of spec?

I'd clean the fuel system as Rolan notes before throwing parts at it.

Mechanical valve trains are "clicky." The valve clearance tightens in use. Tight valve clearances are quieter but even set to max spec (recommended, especially the exhaust) there should be no inconsistent noise across all four cylinders.
