You did do a really nice job either way. If the goal is to refinish the cover in a non-OEM colour...then this method works.
as an aside... ap1 and ap2 valve covers are different color reds. ap1 is a dark deep red, and ap2 is a more brighter vivid red.

Agreed on the VHT - I did mine a few years ago and while it is not exactly stock, it still looks great - it took a few tries to get it right though - irrc the heat gun trick was the answer to get the wrinkle tight and consistent….

agrees with previous comments. Nice work but the color looks more orange-y compared to factory.

Did Honda power-coat these or spray them? I've never actually seen the underside...

My understanding is that they are painted from the factory with a "wrinkle paint", no not powder coated.

Well the underside is uncoated. dont want any coating or paint on the inside of a valve cover
