Default Valve Retainer Swap

I am going to change my stock retainers (ap1) to ap2 retainers, and I noticed that there are two part numbers for the keepers (cotter) one for ap1's and another for ap2's...is there really a difference? Do I just order the ones for my ap1? Thanks.

If you're going with AP2 retainers, go with the AP2 keepers as well. I believe the bevel is ever so slightly different between the two.

The angle is different. if you install AP2 retainers you need AP2 cotters/keepers.

Thanks guys! I am glad I asked...I would have got the ap1's thinking that the valve stems were different.

If your AP1 retainers pass the visual check, I'd just keep them. If the engine hasn't been overrevved, it's been pretty established that they should last forever. All of my AP1 retainers were fine at 143k miles (and 22 or so track days) when the head was rebuilt due to high leakdowns on one cylinder (keep valves adjusted!).

In the end, from what I know, if the stock AP1's check out crack-free, they can (should, even) be left alone.

Wow, that is almost opposite of what i found. I thought they were known to be weak and fail frequently, and yes i have over reved. I also thought it was the intake side that needed to be replaced.

only the intake side have been known to crack. This is due to the larger intake valves which in turn float during an over-rev, causing the rockers to slam down on the valve stems cracking the retainers. The bottom end of the car will go before the exhaust valves float enough to cause this same issue.

all incorrect info removed. This is what leads to blown engines.
