Great post, is your engine more quiet now?
No, it is actually louder now with the new double springs. I did replace my cam chain tensioner which eliminated the loud clanking coming from the front of the engine.

Here are the pics, after cleaning the retainers I actually found two more cracked ones....
Were all cracked retainers intake? I am under the impression these are the first to go.

Yes! The exhaust ones apparently are under FAR less strain.

In the over-revs I've seen, all 8 intake retainers crack, and all the exhaust valves get bent

I am leaning towards purchasing '04 retainers. Does anyone know if the '04 is a direct replacement for the ap1 retainers (any modification needed to make the '04's fit/ work)?
I'm also curious about the '04 retainers. Does anyone have an answer on this?

From what I can see:

The taper angle is the same on both retainers. I have fit both retainers to an 03 valve. They sit in the exact same relative spot on the valve, preserving the OEM AP1 valve spring installed height.

They are a slightly heavier in weight. If I toss them in my hand for a minute, I can feel which one is the 04 retainer without looking. I'd need a gram scale to be sure.

From what I have found, I would not hesitate to try them in MY car. This is all experimental. Why else would Honda beef them up?

Bottom line, someone needs to try it. I would do it to MINE. You guys need to use your own discretion.

Checking Majestic Honda's part numbers, the valves are the same 03 to 04, but springs and retainers have changed. It seems odd that Honda would beef-up the 04 retainers for just the 2.2L when they would be under less strain at 8,000 rpms. Maybe they made an accross the board change in 04 that would have put the newer retainers on the 9,000 rpm motor the rest of the world was still getting as well? Maybe one of our international friends can tell us if this is an 04, or a 2.2L, related change.

Well, I ordered my ap2 retainers today from Honda. They are due in on 2/16/06. I will post up, and let you guys know how they are after I get them installed.

Thanks, Billman for all your assistance.

Other than the 04 retainers can and or should I use the 04+ valve springs also?

Is there anything else that can be changed with the head in the car?

Thanks

Honda would be thinking,"If the AP2 is only going to rev to 8000rpm, vs 9000 rpm for the AP1, we can put in heavier retainers without increasing the tendency to float."
