Default Is a visit to the dealer needed for a CEL?

We can`t read the codes ourself like a Civic or Teg? I`v looked all over and there is nothing in the FAQ. Weird..I always assumed it was possible by using the "fork" method . Fork is pretty ghetto, I usually for go for the paperclip haha

CEL = Check engine light.
Fork = shorts out the connector. The theory is that the CEL will now flash out the trouble code and the observer will be able to translate the code flashes (shorts and longs, like Morse) to the appropriate trouble code.

The "Fork method" should still work it's mandatory to have that connector there one of those "just in case" type of things! when you get the trouble code, let me know I have the shop manual!

WRONG!!!!!!! Won't work!!!!! Get an S2000 and then you may be able to advise people here. Word of wisdom to newbies....don't trust "enthusiasts"!!!!!

The paperclip method worked on OBD-I cars only (i.e. pre-96). After 1996 the feds put in OBD-II which elminates the flash code system and requires a computer or PGM data tool.

The 1996-2001 Prelude still have the SCS connector. I'll have to check my manual, but I was pretty sure this feature has been RETAINED on all OBD2 Hondas. I haven't checked and can't be sure, but I find it hard to believe that Honda would have eliminated this since they are so end-user-friendly. Removing the SCS functionality was NOT a part of the OBD2 standard, I can tell you that.
