Default VTEC Engagement

My VTEC engages at 7000 RPM, instead of 6000 as most people's do and as mine did when I first got it (up till apx. 7500 miles). I've asked my dealer about this and was told it was "normal". But all the talk and dyno's seem to say that 6000 is normal, so I'm not convinced.

Is 7000 RPM in the "normal" range for VTEC engagement, or if not can anything be done to move engagement back down?

Engagement should be aroung 6000 rpms. Many owners would prefer to have a lower vtec engagement not a higher one. I'm surprised how some dealers are so quick to diagnose owners concerns as being "normal". Perhaps you have some type of sensor that is out of spec range? Take your car to another dealer for a second opinion and have them check for engine codes. Good luck and keep us posted.

It depends on the throttle position along with other mystery things I don't know about, but if you are only at half throttle 7K rpm is about right. Try it in 2nd gear WOT and tell us what you find.
BTW, check your oil level too

Well, if I liked Windows my S2000 wouldn't even run

<angry because my Windows system had died yet again...time for yet another new system>

My Mac Plus and Apple //gs still run just fine though

RT: thanks for the suggestion, I'll do WOT and report back. My oil level is topped off. (I have never had my oil level go down, fingers crossed)

Did you switch to synthetic?

Is the VTECH very pronounced at 7K RPM?

No, using standard Honda oil. Hmmm..should say that I am not positive about this, I just have the local Honda dealer change the oil...another question to ask.

I'm not sure it's "very" pronounced, I don't really notice VTEC at all anymore. I can say that when I pay attention I know it's kicking in at that point, and can't tell any difference in engine sound or acceleration before that point. However, my wife still grabs on for dear life anytime I VTEC up the onramp onto the highway, so I could have just become aclimated to the "feel" of the power

Acclimated or not, you should still be able to feel when it kicks in

i have been using synthetic motor oil since 4k miles, i have 7k miles now and my Vtec kicks in hard at 6k RPMS.

why would using a synthetic motor oil make the vtec kick in at a higher rpm?

Engine sound and power change should be pronounced at around 6K.
