VTEC is dependant on MAP pressure. I've seem and fixed this exact problem a dozen times. Even on my own car.

it's dependant on the MAP along with a few other things.

Oil pressure
Coolant temp
Vtec solenoid and wiring in working order (duh)
speed
RPM

Agreed....but the VTEC on/off feel is only caused by a bad MAP signal.

If Billman says this is a MAP issue, I'd bet my life on it.

Is your "maint req" light on? I am not talking about the CEL, but rather the maintenance required reminder. If this light is on, it needs to be reset or Vtec will not engage.
this is the biggest crock of BS i ever heard.

not to be mean...but this is an example of pulling shet out of your ass.

i have neve reset my maintenance indicator light...it remains on...for the past 80,000 miles.

So the problem was that you were so low on oil that you were losing oil pressure on hard acceleration. Not good for the car.

Check the oil level every time you gas up.

Bill, I've seen oil levels so low that (apparently) the oil sloshed away from the pickup during hard acceleration causing a loss of pressure, which (again, apparently) allows the pins to disengage. Adding 2 and a half quarts of oil fixed the VTEC on/off problem, so (apparently) this is similar to the MAP problem you've seen.

I hope none of your customers let their oil levels get that low, but sadly, we see it pretty often.
