weighed shift knob took = less notchy shifting?
On my ap1 I had significant issues getting into 2nd and 6th with the stock aluminum knob. I upgraded to the stock titanium one and what a world of difference. I can shift butterly smooth again. My main concern is does this mask the issue? Or was it all I needed was a heavier knob?

imo, every ittle bit helps. you may need to regrease your shifter linkage. i stuck with the weighted stock one. stock shifter height + weighted = more smoothness! i don't mind the particularly long throws. it gives my synchros more time to react.

that will be the next step. i already did the transmission fluid and regreased the shifter. hopefully this is the ultimate formula besides a transmission rebuild.
i like the longer throw as well. more like i'm used to it. any shorter and the effort you put it to shift is higher. which in my mind makes me think the notchiness is more pronounced.

As long as the your timing, synchro's, gear oil, shifter linkage, master & slave and clutch are in good condition you do not need a weighted shift knob to shift smooth.
It could be you're masking a mechanical problem, it could be your timing was the problem.
I've actually shortened the OEM shifter and still use my OEM shift knob.
Sure, its notchy sometimes when I shift too fast at low rpm.
My bad.

Remove shift knob.
Remove shifter (DIY available)
Measure lenght of thread.
Use this in M10 thread:
or
Also, use this (or simular)
Cut new thread all the way to the base.
Cut shifter to new length (leave thread as long as original thread was)
Deburr.
Install shifter & fresh grease.
Install shift knob.
Done.
Might look like this:

i got the Blox knob in my car, i actually love it alot, and it is cheap.
it is heavier than the stock titanium but not counter sunk.
and it made the shifting alot smoother, this is compare to stock leather knob, CR knob, and Voodoo alumnium.

Indeed, every bit helps and there is no one weak point. The OEM transmission mount is perhaps the weakest evident link to creating a poor shift feel. Replacing the transmission mount with a stiffer variant will significantly improve the shifter controls in every gear.
