do you launch the car ever, take hard turns while accelerating?

When did it happen, or when did you notice it, and was there anything specific that could lead to it or maybe you can put a finger on and say hey...maybe thats why it started doing this?

I mean we got alot of stuff back there.

my advice to everyone is to jack it up high in the rear and run it through the gears.

I found my rear noise to be a broken tooth off the pinion gear, I did it by jacking it up, putting it in 6th gear and letting it idle in 6th, with the rear spinning.

I then analyzed the noise with a stethescope, or even a long screw driver and your ear works(old school!)

give it a try, or give some more info.

Is there a "roaring" sound, also? When the inner CV joints (usually the driver's side) go bad with pitted load surfaces, you'll feel vibration and get something of a sound, too. It's not like the rear is coming apart but noticeable.

Another thing to check is tire roundness and balance...

First check = tire pressure.

Let us know what you find.

I'd bet my house on it being the driver side inner CV joint. Do a search on that and you'll find all kinds of pics and info on what happens to the bearing surface in there. It gets all pitted and then if vibrates under acceleration.

It happened to me and then about 20k later, the joint completely broke on a drag launch start at an auto-x.

do you pics of the inner driver side cv joint? and yes. i let my friend drive my S and he turned pretty hard while acclerating.

jacked the car up and let it spin through all the gears and no weird noise!

do you guys think my rear driver side axles are done?

I wouldn't say they are done. Like I said, I put another 20k on mine before it exploded. Let me also stress to you that I had put about 250 5-7k clutch dumps with r-compound race tires on that axle before it blew. I doubt your's will die soon but the vibrating can be annoying.

To further clarify, the vibrating that's a result of this CV joint issue only occurs under accleration and not deceleration. It also is most easily felt while on the interstate and accelerating at curising speeds.

I don't have any pics but I'm sure there are some on this forum somewhere. This topic is well documented. There is no easy way to check for this with out taking the axle apart but I'm fairly certain that if you can feel the vibration under the circumstances I've stated above, you have this issue.

I got another axle from the junkyard that had 18k on it. I installed this axle about 35k ago and have done maybe another 175 clutch dumps on it and it has yet to fail or even start vibrating. Pretty strange.

Oh, and I'm still on the origninal passenger side axle. I have never seen a documented case where the passenger side axle has failed.

Time for an axle drive bucket swap. You can take the drive buckets off the axles and switch them from side to side. It will be good as new, IF that's the problem.

I'll bet it is

In this pic, the tool on the left is used to pop the lower ball joint for axle removal. The part on the top right is the drive bucket, the part on the bottom right is the axle. Be sure to stand them straight up as show, or the bearings will fall off.

It's not your friend that did this unless he drives it all the time with you as a passenger.

It happens over a long time...
