It goes inside the rocker arm. There are 8 short solid ones (in your pic) and 8 long hollow ones. All 16 need to be accounted for.

I have merged your thread with another about VTEC pins, info above.

Shawn, whoever did the head work on your engine probably tried to drop the valvetrain in from above without securing the rockers. When you do that it can be a bit of pain as they flip flop all over the place. I zip tie all eight assemblies on removal and reinstallation, that way they don't move around and the pins won't fall out. I'll guarantee that the pin fell out as it was being dropped onto the head and the person doing the work didn't notice it. It is an easy fix , but sucks to see stuff like that happen.

Problem fixed! No more knocking and VTEC power is back. What I find amazing is how that one little pin was enough to make my knock sensor go crazy. It caused the car to pull timing and power was low. This head went in around April. I didn't drive the car much knowing I had an issue but I did do a lot of testing and somehow racked up 3000 km in the process. Surprisingly it wasn't until a couple weeks ago that I got a CEL code for the knock sensor. I swapped it out and it lasted until I did a hard pull. It seemed like something was killing my sensors. Everyone I spoke to didn't think that was possible. After putting the pin back and clearing the codes my sensor still failed with a CEL. I swapped another new one in and it has not failed and I only seen 1 knock count since the repair. I just want to let everyone know that it is possible to blow a knock sensor and that they don't just go with physical damage. Thanks again for all the helpful advice.
