What color is the fluid in our struts?

Default What color is the fluid in our struts?

I noticed a couple drops of very bright red, thin, fluid on my garage floor under the rear of the S2000. In checking the underside I found more of the stuff (although not a lot). It seemed concentrated around the right rear strut and on the bottom of the gas tank, as though it had leaked and blown back on the underside. I took the car in today and they say, no leaks. If I knew the fluid in the struts was not red, it might convince me something has just splashed up from the road.

Thanks

The suspension damper (struts) are filled with oil and Nitrogen gas under pressure. I don't think the oil is red. That is usually automatic tranny fluid that's red. If it came out of the strut, you should still see where it's leaking from. Do you have a NON-OEM tranny fluid that might be that color (or NON-OEM diff fluid)?

The fluids are all still factory. I didn't take the wheel off and look real closely before taking it to the dealer. I guess I should probably do that. I'm really torn, because I would like to think it just splashed up there, but I still have this nagging feeling it could be the strut/damper fluid. I guess I'll take a closer look and if I don't spot anything, then I'll drive it and either nothing will happen or the strut will eventually seize up.

The rear shocks (not struts) have separate reservoirs right on the shock. It should be easy to inspect for leaks.

I think a more common leak in that area is one of the fluid filled mounts. I would inspect those at least as carefully as the shocks.

Which mounts have fluid in them?

I thought it was only the two engine mounts that had fluid in them.

I was under the impression that all four differential mounts are fluid damped. I believe there have been a couple of leaks reported.

Hmmmm. I had my diff out and I didn't get that impression. They are 4 "donut" shaped rubbers and the diff mounting studs go through the donut holes. I deformed those things pretty good during the install and they seem like they're solid to me.
