Check these out and tell me what you guys think. What doesn't show are the scratches in the cylinder wall. They are very deep.

Looks like carbon and possibly some oil to me. Not uncommon from what I've seen.

Nothing out of the ordinary. Are the gouges deep enough to hang a fingernail on?

Why did the head come off the car?

Looks like something fell in and melted in there.

I see it now that you point it out. Not sure what it is. Does it really look brassy in person?

There's nothing to my knowledge that is made of brass (or anything that color) that would enter the motor. I've seen odd colors in cylinders before, I wouldn't rule out that it's NOT something normal.

My question stands- why did the head come off?

What type of Gasoline used? What did the Honda Mechanics say it was? Curious....

Tan

I use to have a Volkswagen Scirroco that got pumped with Arco Gas and apparently the stations tank were contaminated and the soil seeped into the gas and straight into my car. What a nightmare and mess that was back in my high school days.

I have not torn very many Honda's down, but it does seem to have excessive deposits, and deep scratches are not normal. How many miles on this engine.. any problems up to now?

Those deposits look normal to me for an engine run relatively hard. Hondas run very rich with stock fuel management when pushed hard. The level of deposits look normal for even 30k miles or less if pushed hard. If driven lightly, more like 60k miles.
