Default What on earth is this noise?

Hi guys,

I wonder if you can help me please.

I posted on the UK forum but am hoping that posting this to a wider audience may get me some more suggestions.

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=663581

In summary;

My S2K when pulling away can occasionally make this rattly fluttery metallic sound under load. It will do it through the gears (stops when you lift off the throttle or change up) then starts again when you get back on the gas.

It is usually accompanied by a noise when coasting (sounds like transmission noise).

The first time this happened I checked the oil and it was showing about 3/4's full so I topped it up to full and the noise went away.

Over the last few months, if the oil dropped to around the 3/4's level the noises would return and I'd top up again and the noises stopped.

I changed the oil at the weekend, this time going for Castrol 0w40 edge sport.

Oil level to the top but yesterday the noise started again. Checked oil level and it's at the top. A few miles later the noise stopped.

This morning, same thing.

The fluttery metallic sound increases with revs but doesn't happen on a constant throttle, only under load. It sounds like pinking (detonation) but a lot, not just the odd pink noise..

It's making me very nervous, any ideas??

If this is the metallic "ringing" sound I believe it is, it is a normal occurrence with AP1's. Mine does it as well. I've asked this same question, and nobody has been able to answer with the actual cause.

Mine happens somewhere between 7000-9000 RPM.

I have heard what sounds like a piston rattle or valve train noise between 4-5k on both my old 00 and newer 03 cars when cold. Even with 3 bars it has to run 20+ minutes for it to go away. I have also heard it on other AP1s and seen a post or two for a similar description. I run 10W30 Mobile1. The milage on the cars does not seem to matter. Heard on one with 26k lowest and 115k highest.

I don't think the sound I hear could be recorded from the interior, it is fairly subtle.

I am considering trying a different oil just to see it the sound changes.
