At what point do you need a reinforced diff?

Default At what point do you need a reinforced diff?

I run a Comptech aftercooled SC, and have 255 series rear tires. Do I need to look at putting a Comptech diff in my car for street driving and occassional track days (but little to no drag racing)?

what about if i up the boost a little and put a stiffer clutch in? at what point is the stronger diff in order?

Considering stock cars with abusive drivers have broke them, there really isn't a power threshold you'll need one.

Any car making another 100whp over stock could use it.

Don't do high rpm clutch dumps and you will more than likely fine.

not necessarily true. being a poor driver will cause failed diffs probably more than anything. i've seen more than a few S2000's with failed diffs who NEVER did clutch dumps or other such things. but they were certainly not very good stick drivers.

also not necessarily true IMO. don't do clutch dumps INCORRECTLY and you'll more than likely be fine.

as for the diff question. do you ever floor your car? then you would benefit from a reinforced diff. even a stock S2000 under heavy acceleration can cause a very slight flex in the bearing caps. this can cause the ring gear to move away from the pinion gear and cause premature wear and even failure.

also, doing a low rpm clutch dump which makes the engine bog, can cause quite a shock to the entire drive train. this can also cause diff failure.

And I disagree. A clutch dump is a clutch dump. You rev to a high enough rpm to not bog (7500 to 9000 rpm) and pop the clutch. In my mind that's a clutch dump. And in my mind, do a few of those and say goodby to your stock differential. If you rev to a high rpm and slip the clutch, that's not a clutch dump. And if the differential doesn't go, the half shaft will.

haha, half shafts are a wear item.

diffs aren't.

I had about 1000 clutch dumps on my 01 S2000, and my current S2000 (before the reinforced diff) had well over 500. and several others who are members of the "13's stock" S2000 club have also had hundreds of clutch dumps, and NEVER had a problem. in fact, i've yet to see one person who actually HAS a 13 second timeslip n/a have a failed diff.

remember I am talking stock or a couple bolt ons here. not FI. in stock form, the diff can take plenty of clutch dumps, if done correctly.
