The "projector" part of the HID system is the lens that the light shines through. That's the part you see if you look directly at the headlight - the round lens thing that look like really, really thick glasses on a near-sighted person. This is the same kind of lens that you see on a slide or movie projector, hence the name. The light from the lamp goes through this lens and gets "focussed" into a pattern and a distance that is deemed suitable for a car driving down a road. Because the light is shot "through" the lens as opposed to being reflected back by the shiny, parabollic surface of the typical sealed beam headlight, it needs to be very high in lumens ("high intensity"). Passing light through a lens diminishes it's brightness so you need more to begin with. The bonus is that the light is scattered less for a more efficient pattern of illumination.

Has anyone had a HID burn out yet?
What is the normal life span of a HID light?

I've heard the number 10,000 hours for the bulb being thrown around, but this was not a documented number.
