Default what is rear differential

We'll i just bought my s2000 a few months ago and is fairly new to the rwd concept. I was wondering what is the rear differential? I had a fwd car before so i am unaware what the rear differential is/mean. Can anyone please explain to me what it means. I've been reading quite a few topics regarding the reliable issue of the rear differential so i am curious to know what this really is. Thanks alot.

it's a differential in the rear.

differential: A device - usually made of gears - that divides the torque between the driving wheels and permits the wheels to turn at different speeds. This is especially important when negotiating a corner, as the inside wheels turn more slowly than the outside wheels.

Rear: the back of something, as distinguished from the front: The porch is at the rear of the house.
