Wheel balance weights - where and what type?
So, I'm changing my oil last night and notice that someone put a conventional styled (clip-on?) wheel weight on the inside lip of my front right wheel. I thought our cars should only take the stick on kind of weights? I did have the car in to the dealer recently for the spark plug update and had asked the dealer to balance the wheels at that time. Should I call up the dealer, point out what I saw, and ask them to redo it with the stick on weights only? Or is this something I do not need to be concerned about?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.
Balance wise, it shouldn't matter where the weights are (unless your wheel happens to be severely off balance down the midline - think offset). For esthetics, though, they should have used the stick on type that go on the inside surface behind the wheel spokes. However, they need to clean the wheel in that area really well or the weights won't stick too well and they will fall off with repeated car washings.
Clip on on the inside is the proper way to do it. The closer to the edge, the better the accuracy. The only reason that we do not have clip on weights on the outside is that our rim is a revers mount and there is no way to use a clip on, even the ones that MB and BMW use will not fit. The weights are available from Honda, but need to be ordered is specific ounces. I was thinking about ordering some just to have on hand since I have not found anyone that stocks our style. Most places use the cheep looking stuff.
Okay, so it's no big deal that they used the clip-ons. It's reasonable to assume that they just didn't have the sticky ones they needed.
Let me ask this: if a wheel is found to be out of balance, the proper procedure would be to remove any old weights first and then re-balance the wheel, correct? So, since I have a clip-on weight, I should not have any of the stick-on weights leftover on that wheel?
Dave, are the clip-ons still better than the stick-ons when factoring in that we can't put clip-ons on the outer lip of our wheels? I thought the clip-ons were best because you could put an equal amount on both the inside and outside lip of the wheel to correct the imbalance.
Thanks again, guys!

take you wheel to a shop and get it balanced if you are concerned. they have those newfangled "computer" thingies that can tell you exactly how much weight you need and where to put it to balance the wheel.
Might want to read that again, Unabageler. The dealer did a balance for me the day I got the spark plug update done. I was simply wondering why they used a different style of weight than what came on the car. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
