I agree with xviper. I have an '06 S also. It has a oil reminder that is in percentages. Push the TRIP button 3 times from Trip A odometer and it will say oil and a percentage.

[QUOTE=ONEQUIKSTI,Jun 4 2006, 04:11 PM] Yes I do have the manual, but I really have not had time to sit and read it

Change it once your oil reminder dips down to about 20% (which will probably end up being about 3,500 to 4,000 miles). Stick with conventional oil for the first 10,000 miles if you want to go by what Honda recommends.

BTW, the regualr Mobil 10w30 is the exact same oil as the Exxon Superflo 10w30 if you stay with non-synthetic

one question i have that i'm pretty sure is in the manual but i'm not at home. if you use synthetic oil which i'm planning on doing when i get the 1st oil change, will the oil change meter know the difference between regular vs synthetic. if the oil life meter is based on the oil then i'm going to assume that synthetic will give me longer intervals between changes. i usually run synthetic to 7500 miles vs 5000 with regular oil and the meter as of now is at 80% and I have 1100 miles on the car.

first, do NOT use synthetic until you get 7500-10,000 miles on the car. this is to ensure proper breakin per honda.

also, i am unaware of the exact intricacies of the oil minder system, but from what i know it has no idea if you are using synthetic. to be honest, it would have a hard time determining, considering the best conventional oils perform as good as synthetic oils.

the oil minder is basically just an algorithim designed to count the number of rev's the engine is put through, as well as how much throttle is used, etc.

It has no way of knowing what kind of oil you throw in there.

good to know, thank you for the input.

why the 10k before the switch to synthetic? you've explained proper break in period but 7500 miles i would think is sufficient time to start using synthetic. you can correct me if i'm wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong here. The S2000 has CFR (carbon fiber reinforced) cylinder walls which are very hard, thus take longer to wear-in than a typical cylinder.

I actually made the switch to M1 at exactly 7,500 miles. I drove rather spirited from the day I drove my car off the lot, up until 7,500 miles (still do ) including one track day at 6,500 miles which consisted of about 130-140 miles of hard driving. I have done numerous WOT, flat out 1 1/4 miles runs which resulted in my tach flashing the red bars in fifth gear early on in my cars life, well before I made the switch to M1.

I would say my engine was well worn-in when I made the switch, but I'm not your average driver. I do not recommend anyone do what I did, do so at your own risk. The risks include mechanical failure or serious personal injury.

For the average driver, I believe 10k is the magic number for the engine to be worn-in enough to make the switch to synthetic motor oil.

Drive safe
