Default Whining

Hi Guys,

I know there have been countless threads on this and i've read through quite a few and haven't been able to pinpoint an answer.

So yes - i hear a whine. It occurred after 4.44 install. A diff oil change has been done, i've also changed the tranny oil as well.

The gear whine increases proportional to speed - my question is, if there is diff whine, would it also whine if the car is in neutral or clutch is depressed while coasting?

If i stop accelerating (foot off throttle), place the car in neutral or depress the clutch while the car is rolling, the whine disappears.

I'm wondering if my current situation is one of these circumstances:

1) Tranny whine due to failed bearings (also a cause of whine it seems) - a possible explanation as to why the sound disappears when clutch is depressed?
2) Diff whine due to poor 4.44 final drive install however(no whine present when coasting in neutral or clutch depressed)
3) Possible drive shaft fault?

Please note, no whine was present prior to the 4.44 install. I know it may seem obvious but what gets to me is circumstance 2 - why doesn't it whine when in neutral or clutch depressed?

Diff whine usually occurs under load only, or at the very least acentuated by load.

I think most non-OEM gear setups induce a little whine.. it shouldn't be very loud though.

but I don't really know

I understand a little whine, but mine is clearly excessive. It easily supersedes my 70mm exhaust when cruising/accelerating. I just hope no harm has been done to the final drive!!

What brand of 4.44 gears did you have installed?

It was motorklasse. I understand there may be stigma surrounding this brand but people have successfully installed their's with no whine. The mechanic did not follow the backlash settings so i'm speculating this may be the sole reason why it is whining.

@puddymod, if its whine, its very likely that harm could be inflicted on the FD right? It'd then be the responsibility for the shop to replace i'm hoping..haha

I know of none of these gears ever successfully installed without some whine. Some whine less than others but they all whine. PM me any info from the installer such as a backlash setting used. Most likely this is not their fault as these gears are problematic.

I would PM you but he did not comment on the backlash settings. He requested for a distance collar before he reattempts the second install - so i'm currently in the middle of sourcing it before i take it back to him. What he did say after the initial install was that he made it quite tight ...and that's all i have to go off by lol.
