Default Whining Noise

Hello all,

My name is Dyllan and I recently purchased my second S2000. For the past week or so I have been noticing an irritating whining noise that fluctuates with RPM. I will do my best to explain the noise and when it occurs.

The whine is most noticeable on a cold start and or from 1500-3000 RPM (when warm). After 3000 the engine noise begins to drown it out.
The whine does not change/fade after the car is warmed up or while driving. It also occurs regardless of being in gear or neutral.
The A/C has no effect on it.
When inspecting the noise, it seems to be coming from the front of the motor but I could not pinpoint it.
The noise is easily heard with the top up or down.
It slightly increases in volume as the RPM's rise but stays relatively low.

My car is a 2005 with 40k miles and all fluids have been recently changed with the recommended brands and weights. I have looked at similar situations in other threads but nothing quite matches up and any time I ask someone in person they blame the accesories and state it's normal. I have owned quite a few cars and it just does not seem normal to me and before I start blindly guessing and replacing things I figured some of you might know what's up! Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response. I have read through that and it seems the only explanation people had was one of the pulley bearings. I used a stethoscope on mine and they seemed quiet and healthy (not really quite but you know what I mean haha). I have considered replacing the pulleys but it would be a waste of money if it does not fix the issue (it did not fix his) and his car is also quite at idle.

When your sitting at idle in the car, does the sound go away when you push in the clutch?

I should have included that, no the clutch being engaged does not matter.

So then its not trans related, it has to be engine side.

If you suspect something but cant figure out, sometimes you just have to wait for it to fail before you know what to fix, and that's the cheapest option sometimes rather then blindly chase parts to replace. Just make sure you have AAA. It may be nothing really. Could be the beginnings of a TCT going out which is common problem, but that's usually a rattle sound and I found to be just a 1-2 sec on cold start up and go away when it first shows it face.

Yeah that might be the best choice at the moment.

I really appreciate all of your help and maybe some others will chime in. I will keep this thread updated for future reference as well.

Might want to check the belt tensioner pully. My '07 Civic Si had a whine like that, changed the pully and whine went away. I think the S2K uses the same one.
