I have noted that a few members have commented on this forum that the Vafc doesn't have much affect on the 02/03 cars. Is this true?
Can you tell a difference in the power delivery and would you buy the Vafc unit again?
Any replies would be great
I have an '02 with a V-AFC. It does seem true that the V-AFC doesn't provide a significant gain at peak, but it does provide more "area under the curve" by lowering the VTEC engagement point and by extending the power up top.
Here is my before / after dyno tuning graph. My 1st run was with all fuel corrections set to 0, but with the VTEC engagement set to 5700 RPMs.
As I said, you can't see the gains I got at the VTEC engagement point, because all 3 plots are with the engagement point adjusted. However, you can see how much was gained above 8300 RPMs (10-15 HP). The green plot is before tuning, red plot is after tuning, and the blue plot is after tuning and an ECU reset.
The VTEC transition is much smoother than before. The VTEC kick is gone. The additional power at redline is definitely noticeable. I am happy with the results.
I only gained 3HP peak. However, the car felt a lot faster, VTEC transition was smoother, and I know the car is more efficient since I get more MPG per tank with the same driving style. I removed the VAFC and noticed the ECU with out fuel correctionseems like it hits a wall at the VTEC engagement point. I would definately do this mod again, maybe even opt for something that gives greater control (eManage, EMS). Incidentally, after installing the Toda header, the VTEC transition was supressed even further. It feels like the car just pulls till about 6.5K and then it quickly hits 9K. Sorry I don't have my dyno sheet handy at this time.
You can get a VAFC easily, you just need to search. Cheapest way to do it, buy one on ebay. Search for VAFC or VTEC controller. Warranty.... haha. Honda doesn't back up their warranties so what does it matter! But.... lets say they did, yes, it would void your warranty. Hope this helps.
