Default Why is a chipped key needed?

I tried hiding my chipped key in the house and went into the detached garage with a regular key. I dared not start it not knowing the full ramifications if I tried, but everything seemed to initialize. The fuel pump primed , dash lights on seemed willing ...I didn't start it fearing fuel may enter the exhaust and hurt the cat if it didn't fire up, I'd like to think the big H has a contingency in place for this .......

Any input would be welcome and appreciated ....

Answered my own dumb question...

I see the green key light flashes with the non chipped key so the immobilizer is working then...
