Default Why is it Comptech can.....when Vortech Can't.....

run boost without the timing black box and the Vortech can't.

Both kits run similar boosts, and most Comptech kits out there arent even aftercooled. There are reports of people running Vortechs that have the "black box" AND the aftercooler and still detonating.

I am planning on piecing a kit together ( i want to incorporate a front mount intercooler with the SC). Trying to decide which supercharger to go with. Most would recommend going with the Vortech because the VQ blower has more potential, however, I feel the Comptech would have less to tinker with as far as intergrating the front mount.

Your opinions are greatly appreciated...thanks.

who said anything about vortech can't do it without the black boxes

I think the question that you should ask is why Vortech offers 3 years warranty and comptech only offer 2 on their kits

always wondered that myself. i had one of the first production kits with the defective "black boxes" so while i sent the box out for exchange i had to drive the car without it. the vortech dood just told me either not to vtec it OR use some octane boost.

i was cheap and stupid so i just decided not to use octane booster and still vtec it! car still ran strong as hell with no cel lights or anything. so as to why the vortech kit needs it and the comptech doesnt still makes me wonder.

Knock sensor - if you're still running the stock ECU with boost, you're living on borrowed time.

The only solution would be to control timing better, obviously. e-manage, "black box", AEM EMS, J&S Safeguard, etc..
