Default Will car roll in neutral if the diff is broken?

I busted my axle and replaced them, and now when I put my car in gear it just makes a grinding noise. I shop I know said it's not the diff cause the car rolls freely. What else could it be? Shouldn't the car just roll freely with the broken diff?

I dont think grinding when putting in gear has anything to do with your diff. If it was your diff it would probably grind when rolling and the car wouldnt roll very far.

Can you drive it at all? Does it grind when your not moving or every gear. Does it do it when the cars not started and you put it in gear?

It only grinds when I put it in gear and try to move it, 1st and reverse. Shifts into gear fine . . . Thanks for your help so far, btw.

Im not an expert, but it sounds like a clutch problem. What happened in the first place when you busted your axles?

My car won't move at all in gear, but will roll in neutral. When it rolls it makes a cyclical clunking noise. It's going to shop to determine if its the diff or not.

Im confused. So when the cars on, and you push the clutch in and put it in first it grinds? Can you get it in 1st all the way even with the grind? Once in first you let out the clutch and it dosent move?

Only grinds when I release the clutch in gear (1st or reverse). And the noise is coming from the rearend.
