Default Won't rev past 7000rpm, no VTEC, P1366 / P1367

Hello all,

Working on a MY00 S2000, hoping to see if anyone has dealt with a similar issue before.

S2000 starts and drives fine with no codes.
However, it doesn't seem to engage VTEC, hits a hard rev limit around 7000 RPM, throws a P1366 / P1367 code, and throws it into limp mode.
Clearing the codes brings it back to normal until I try to hit 7000 RPM again.

I'm stumped in that the problems only start to show in VTEC, otherwise it putts around fine with no codes.

Yes it is fully warmed up.

Things tried so far
  • New OEM cam sensor
  • New OEM VTEC solenoid
  • New alternator
  • Compression/leakdown tested at 195 PSI / 5% across all 4 cylinders
  • Timing is correct
  • Camshaft assembly and pulse plates looked correct/ok for an AP1
  • Rocker arm assembly pins all there
  • Valve clearances within spec

You've been with us for several years. New-to-you car, or one you've had for a while? Just trying to determine if this is something that "just happened." What's the last thing you did to the engine?

Not my car and the owner got it like this so not much history.

The whole car looks like it's been taken apart and rushed back together at some point.

Im going to check out the grounds and harness next but this one's got me stumped since the issues only present itself at a higher RPM

Check the oil pressure switch on the vtec solenoid. It is very easy to snap off the connector during oil changes and not realize it since the connector drops into the engine bay. Make sure you trace the electrical wires to find it, if it is not connected to the solenoid.

Don't the P1366 and P1367 indicate an issue with the cam position sensors? He prolly should rule this out first.

Or at least clear the CEL codes. And see if they come back.

No?

The first thing on his list was CAM sensor, things that cause the car not to go into vtec include MAP sensor.

Thanks all for the input. Yes everything was already tried and noted in my original post.

Tried a few more things:
Engine grounds are all there.
Harness ground at the back of cylinder head looks to be there.
Tested voltage output from the harness to both cam sensors and they're both outputting approx. 0.4-0.5v.
VTEC oil pressure switch connector is good
Swapped MAP sensor with a known working one, no avail.

You do prolly have an adequate oil level. Right?

How about the wiring to the sensors or any other place on the engine? Any damage?
