my engine looked spotless w/ the same number of miles...if your engine is varnished, the previous owner probably rarely changed the oil...

if you plan on keeping the car for awhile, might not be a bad idea to find a another engine.

The directions on the Amsoil flush bottle state to not drive while the stuff is mixed with the oil.
Just a "fast idle" for 15-20 minutes.

They shipped the stuff to me by mistake and I haven't used it in my S2000 - and I'm nog going to as the valve train was spotless the last time I checked the valve clearance.

The new Pennzoil Ultra is supposed to be very good at removing sludge / varnish build-up.

 

I really don't wanna do a flush so I think i'll just change my oil much earlier for this season. I might pop the cover off at the end of this season just to check if its getting any better, if not then I might not have a choice but to try a flush. Hope all goes well, thanks for all the replies.

pennzoil has always made big claims about sludge removal...

i recently put pennzoil platinum synthetic into my dad's corolla that had dark varnishing all over the valve train (it's a toyota thing). prior to this, the car had always had its oil changed every 4000km using regular dino oil and the car has never burned a drop of oil before. anyway, after 2000km on the pennzoil platinum, the car had burned just over half a liter of oil. i'm thinking the oil removed enough sludge that it is now able to seep past some seals. or even worse, the loose sludge clogged up other small oil ways.

i wonder if the motor would have been better off if i didn't switch it to synthetic. the motor running on dino oil wasn't a sludge motor but it was dirty. switching the motor to synth fluid has turned it into one that could potentially become an oil burning monster.

anyways, i think it's a crap shoot messing around w/ a dirty motor. lifespan might be shortened if one continued using dino oil on a motor that was obviously sludging up. trying to remove the sludge is an option but that could cause even more problems too. OP, you should try to get the seller to swap the motor if possible (the s2k motor is known to stay spotless. a heavily varnished one could mean that the thing has super high mileage or it was really poorly maintained)

I would stick to the Pennzoil for now and at least one extra OCI.
Give the stuff the chance to clean.
The oil consumption should go down to normal.
Does the Toyota have an crank case ventilation system?
If so, check that too.
