Default 2 Way Radios

I seldom use my 2 Way Radios, but do like to have them available. I have discovered that one of mine is either not sending or the receiving when set to an interference sub channel other than 0. These radios are old (Motorola Walkabout T5820 are old (20 years of so)) and are not that clear when they are working)) so am considering replacing them. But I also don't want to spend a lot replacing them. Prices seem to be all over the place.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

JIm

I have been using the Midland handhelds but find they are a pain to hear. I upgraded to the MXT275, which places all of the controls on the handset so you can tuck away the main unit. That seems to be better, but I have only used it with the wife when we go cruising (she continues to use the handheld), me in the S2K and she in her Miata. Midland just released the high wattage (50W!) MXT575, but it is pricey. If you just want a newer set of handhelds, any FRS/GMRS will be sufficient. If you need more range, step up to the MXT275 (https://midlandusa.com/collections/micromobile).

nope mine aren't quite that age but would still be thought of as old.

Toy radios like the Motorola Talkabout T5820 are $20 for a pair on Ebay.

Not sure what your point is? I am not surprised since they are 20 years old now. 20 years ago they were considered good and cost $70 (which was a lot back then).

To use these radios at the full power on the GMRS spectrum legally you need a license. I doubt that the 50W is for FRS which is what most of us use on drives.

FRS is limited to 2W now as of the end of 2020. It's not that hard to get your license, so people really should just get it if they plan to use the radio a lot. You'll be able to transmit further, use repeaters, etc.

Currently, it costs $35 for a GMRS license and its good for 5 years (I think) and covers you and any "family members" who may be using your radios.
