Accents
I don't think I really have an accent, but the topic came up in another thread. Someone asked me if I were British once. Didn't quite get that. Maybe a bit of a suthin' one, but certainly not as pronounced as Val's.
When I was in college in NC, though, it was pronounced. I have a habit of picking up the accent of wherever I am, if I'm there for any length of time (say about five days??). But many peeps keep their original one forever. Interesting...the +1 is from NJ and you know it. He still has his Joisey accent after all this time of not living there, and living in many other places. Jim, our language expert, needs to weigh in!
Anyone else like me, or are you like my +1?

Maybe I should clarify and say I may have a mixture of accents. People ask me frequently where I'm from, so I guess they are having a hard time pinpointing it from my accent. I did live all over growing up, but have been in the DC area for a long time. Of course, people here are from all over the country and the world, so there are many accents floating around.

But, really, doesn't the answer depend entirely on who's asking? HPH
I live in MA. Ted Kennedy has a Boston/MA accent. I do not...
I know I speak "Massachusetts." I talk too fast, and I often don't pronounce the r's. Some folks from some areas in MA, are even worse. There is town about 12 miles from where I live, those folks have a different accent than we do.
I lived in VA for a year, and I know I likely picked up an accent for a short time. I probably even said "y'all."
I'm always amazed, that most news anchors all sound the same, no distinct accent, and we know they are from all over the country.

I tend to pick up some of the accent from the people who live near me (this was a real hoot after spending 3 1/2 years in Turkey). I grew up in the Cleveland area up to the age of 13. People here in Cincy seem to be able to hear it, folks from back in Cleveland think I speak southern (well, southern to them - more like southern Ohio).
