Default another reason to hate verizon wireless

so the money grubbers at verizon wireless have found a new way to reach into your wallet.

Upgrade Fee

What is the upgrade fee?

The $30 upgrade fee applies any time you purchase a new device at a discount, with a contract extension, to replace an old device. This fee is in addition to the cost of the new device and applicable taxes. The upgrade fee does not apply when a new device is purchased at the full retail price.
translation, we're charging you $30 to discount your phone price.

So they show you a cheap price up front until you actually get to the cash register. Some would almost call that bait and switch.

I voted with my feet and walked out.

I heard about this. I guess getting a new contract isn't enough for them. I have A T& T, not sure if they are going down this road yet. I've had my phone for quite a while...........I may find out what they have "in store" (pun intended) for me before long.

Wonder if enough people will complain..... to get Verizon to drop it...

A few banks were going to charge fees on certain types of acc'ts... and enough people did complain... and the banks dropped it.

Hmmm...the last couple of times I've renewed my contract, I got the new phone basically for free. Cost me $50, but then I got a $50 rebate. It will be interesting to see what happens next time, in Sept.

I'm glad I gave up all that contract cell stuff. I went with Straight Talk. Thirty bucks a month (plus tax) for one thousand minutes (well over sixteen hours) and a thousand texts. And my phone uses the Verizon cellular network. My old "unlimited" plan with Verizon worked out to about twelve hundred bucks a year, plus the cost of the phone. If I had gone with a data plan so that I could use my phone as a hotspot for my laptop/iPad, it would have cost me an additional four to six hundred bucks a year.
What a racket these thieves have going for themselves.

I don't disagree their "upgrade fee" is total BS, but here's another side of Verizon. Last fall I was staying in a condo in Mexico with what I thought was free wi-fi. When I found out that the roaming charges had already exceeded $250.00, I called Verizon customer service. The lady signed me up for 2 weeks of international data roaming at a cost of about 40 dollars, made it retroactive and saved me over $200 in one call.

AT&T and other had been doing this for years. Verizon just start with this fee sometime this year. I usually paid when I pick up the phone at the store and call customer service once I get the first statement to waive the upgrade fee.

I currently have 3 smart phones and an additional cell phone and a land line with verizon.
So I have a simpler solution.
I'm going to go back to my old voice only phone.
They can go pound sand and I'll leave $100 plus a month in my pocket.

I own my phone and purchase 1,000 minutes from T-Mobile usually once/year for $100.00. As long as you purchase another $100.00 worth of minutes before the 12 months runs out those minutes roll over into the next year. I know that many of you use your phone for business and texting so this may not be cost effective for you, but for people like myself who seldom use their cell phone, it works out great.

That would be a good reason for cutting phone calls short.... "I'm running out of minutes, talk to you next month!"
