Any idea what this animal is?

Alec, I agree, that looks like one sick coyote. Here in Westlake I only have health coyotes. We send all of the sick ones over to your neighborhood!

Thanks all, the consensus seems to be a young, malnourished coyote, sounds reasonable. I'll give animal control a call on Monday. That's funny Dave - in addition to this critter, there are 3 or 4 deer that eat every flower in sight (including a large 8pt buck), two hawks and an American eagle that have all taken residence in our neighborhood. And I live in one of the most densly-populated communities between NY and Chicago. Go figure.

OK, update, I did talk to animal control on Monday, they have rec'd a few calls about this varmit. They don't know what it is but have set up a couple traps (some sort of cage used to catch skunks) but so far have only caught a few cats. Also cautioned to keep an eye on pets and small children, make sure not to have food outside, keeps garbage containers closed, keep garage and shed doors closed, etc.
