Ok here is the warning you may spend hours in this one post, so before starting anything make sure you have the time.

with that said below you will find a world of resource to help you protect your privacy and keep your computer running in top notch shape

without futher ado here are some links and vital info explore each one with ample time.

for you guys and gals running ff you should add in this extension

http://mrl.nyu.edu/~dhowe/trackmenot/

you can also go here for some more things you should do

http://www.security-hacks.com/2007/06/08/f...er-your-privacy

Also if your using xp or vista you should really learn and shut off the services that are not needed.

The command line to get to your services is services.msc I do recommend that you touch nothing unless you know what you are doing. you can learn about the services via this website

http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm

Also you can go to

http://www.xp-antispy.org/index.php/lang-en

install that and make a lot of your system tweaks with that.

another thing to consider is

http://www.webroot.com/En_US/consumer-prod...ndowwasher.html

this used effectively will clean a lot of nasty bugs if used after closing the browser but before a reboot.

here is another ff extension

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1306

and some more

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ad...numpg=10&id=433

I could go on and on but thats enough for now.

umm wait one more this one is for you Dave it may have helped you in your situation

http://www.security-hacks.com/2007/07/02/f...script-features

sorry but one more

this one is a big deal make sue you click each tab and tweak each setting in here

http://www.security-hacks.com/2007/06/11/f...cy-and-security

finally one more go to

https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

and run a port probe see what your giving up to the world if you are not stealth than its time to consider a good firewall.

Educate yourselves its worth a pound of gold on the flip side

Mike there is NO reason to pay for AOL unless you use it to dial up?

AOL is free to anyone who brings their own connection. I switched my Mom over about a year ago. You just won't get any of their great customer service if you are a "free" customer.

You can make the change on AOL/billing.
^^ I don't think you get the antivirus software if you run the free version of aol.

Back OT. I use McAfee provided by comcast on the main computer and I run Trend Micro's PC-cillin on the laptop. I do not recall what I pay for Pc-cillin but it is great. I had Norton some years back and had a lot of problems with its compatibility with some of the software I was using at the time.

That sucks, Dave.

For what it's worth, I've used AVG for years now, and it's caught everything that I was ever exposed to (AFAIK!)

McAfee. The +1 had Norton, but when we bought the new desktop it had McAfee installed. I've had McAfee for a long time on my laptop.

She does not remember the site. She was looking for Lennox Carol Town collection.... for a miniture tree.

Instead I bought her a big one and cut it down.

I feel your pain. I've had to beat this thing to death on 4 or 5 workstations at work and it's a real PITA to remove completely. None of the users could remember the exact sequence of message boxes that made the virus go live or even how they responded.

Who is your ISP? If it's Comcast I just use the McAffee suite they let you have for free at home.

Another useful and free tool is Super AntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) which will remove a lot of malware that's not technically a virus but is software you didn't mean to load and don't want on your PC.

You can also Google the name of the faux application and sometimes find concise instructions for removing it.
I have Comcast digital but have not used their protection. Wouldn't it be great if we could use them all at the same time. One time I did run two at the same time..... not something I would recommend or do again.

I'd have to check. I know my Mom has not had any problems....I think she is covered, but I could be wrong.

one advantage of Firefox vs IE is seems to be more robust since fewer people use it.
I used to be a Foxfire user. They made programing changes at some point and time that gave me major grief. I did their so-called work arounds but just kept having problems and finally just gave up and went to IE.

I believe most of the bad rap Norton gets is due to Norton System Works. I would not recommend or use that. But I don't think their Anti-virus software is a biggie.
