I was using Norton System Works but stopped when I had a failure and found out it mucks with your boot sector and won't completely uninstall without huge effort.

Moved to AVG free but stopped because there is no easy way to turn it off when I'm editing video and want more resources. I finally settled on Avira and it has been working well. You can disable the virus engine easily and it updates daily.

Those two "Add Reply" buttons get me bolloxed up about half the time.

Except in this case, I reckon it could just be a virus...

I looked into a number of AV packages before I finally picked one. I had been using Norton, which worked most of the time, but it was a real resource hog ( w/zzzz).
I also had used McAfee in the past and had issues.
I currently use BitDefender which updates in background a number of times a day. I also looked at Kaspersky which got very good reviews.

The upshot to this is in one of the PC mags back about a year ago they reviewed some AV software, and the quote that comes to mind is "With AV software you get what you pay for." I have used AVG and it had missed some items, that cured me of AV freeware.

You should note that the free version of AVG has limited functionality when compared to the versions you pay for. Your subscription to Norton probably did more than the free version of AVG.

CNET.com's review of AVG 8
That must be an older review. That gave it 5 stars for the version I just loaded.

Here is an excellent comparison article that just came out. Reading the whole article it sounds like they really put the software to test, taking the emotions out of it. I still have several months left on my Norton subscription, so I'm going back. They rank Norton and ESET as the best. AviraAntivir rated as the best Free software.

I use to use AVG free and was very happy with it until my desktop system became infected with a virus. Somehow it had gotten past AVG. I purchased Bitdefender and it has worked wonders as it won't allow anything to execute without your approval. I am not sure how mush system resources it is using but I haven't had any issues for over a year.
