Default Bears!

I had an interesting encounter with a bear yesterday at work and they seem to be getting more comfortable around people. I was walking across campus yesterday and two of the maintenance guys called me over and said there was a bear sitting in the treeline right behind the dumpster so I went over and sure enough there it was. We ended up drawing a bit of a crowd probably 7 or 8 people and the bear came out of the woods looked at us and climbed into the side door of the dumpster grabbed some garbage and dragged it out I couldn't believe it this was at about two in the afternoon! He just took his time wasn't even fazed one of the maint. guys grabbed a pot and pan and banged it together and he just ignored it didn't even move!
So do YOU have bears were you live and have they been coming around more?

Every now and then, but it's to be expected here in the adirondacks.

No. Just cats and raccoons. The raccoons around here aren't fazed by much either.

In Patty's area I know they have to worry about coyotes and I know I've seen her post pictures of small mountain lions.

No bears but deer daily and nightly. I guess I should be happy that my husband won't let me plant anything.

We don't have them here yet but they are making appearances about 15 to 20 mile to the east. It won't be long before they make it around here.

Now Yellowstone is a little different!

Black bears? Polar bears? Grizzly bears? Where do you live? Bad news for bears that are acclimated to people.

We frequently see black bears on our Colorado land and surrounding roads. But they are more often seen eating from garbage cans in Durango and in the smaller towns in the area. The bear population seems to be increasing year by year. In Durango they have started selling bear-proof garbage containers. But you don't hear of any bear aggression against humans - that I know of.

We have about 100 feet of woods behind my house and wetlands behind that. As a result we get more than our share of animals.

We see an occasional bear, a few fox (they're beautiful animals), lots and lots of deer, squirrels and some rabbits. An occasional turtle and a snake once in a while. Hard to believe this is New Jersey. I'd have thought that the animals would be afraid of getting mugged.

A number of years ago I planted some Asian pear trees. Every spring we have about 100 to 200 pears growing but we've yet to have even one. The squirrels and deer get to them before they ripen. They take a few bites and leave the rest on the lawn. I refuse to spray so I'm not sure if we'll ever get to enjoy them.

We do have bears. They like to get into animal feeders. Of course we also have mountain lions and bobcats galore. They are always going after my wife's chickens and geese. We have a completely enclosed area for them because of that.

One female lion nailed a 40 something mother of two about 10 years ago in my area. She was out for a solo jog. They found the uneaten portion covered up (lions do that) and discovered the lion with cubs. They killed the killer and put the cubs in the zoo. More $ came in for the cubs than for the family that lost mom.
