We buy non fat milk. The store brand doesn't seem to last as long as the name brand. I've had milk that's getting the funny test before the use by date. We will drink milk past the use by date. As mentioned the "nose knows." Generally, I notice it before Rick.
We don't eat a lot of bread so it gets purchased and frozen on the same day.
Use by date on potato chips and other products can vary. I would not toss an item without sampling first. BUT, if there's mold, it would get tossed. My mother would have done as Dave's/Scooter's, cut off the bad part. Depression era people did not waste food.
The expiration date on OTC medication is often ignored in my house, same goes for prescription meds. I'm stocked up on asthma meds that I don't need at the moment, but I'm not about to toss them. $$$$

We took your suggestion and picked some organic milk along with some regular milk. Wouldn't you know it - the best buy date is total unreadable!
I noticed, back when I had a job, that the water that got delivered had a best used buy date. I asked the water guy about it and he said everything has a best used by date on it and I paid attention after that and have noticed that everything does seem to have a best used by date.

I think the deal with bottled water has to do with the chemicals that can eventually leach into the water from the plastic bottle. But salt and sugar, two natural preservatives, also have expiration dates.
