We've seen a zillion bird ID books. By far, the best we've found, is "A guide to field identification Birds of North America" by Chandler S. Robbins, Bertel Bruun and Herbert S. Zim published by Golden Press.

Stick a bunch of these up on the roof

Hire a roofing contractor to permanantly mount them.

I put up a second feeder today since the birds were emptying the one daily. I also put out a suet cake. I used to make my own ... might just start that again. Cheaper than buying them at Lowe's when you consider gas and time factors.
The big wood pecker took a chunk of feathers out of one of the small birds who was waiting to feed. I have seen a bird kill a squirrel but not turn on their own.
It's a jungle out there!

One of the reasons I enjoy observing from inside.
