Default Blizzard of '93

It was twenty years ago today Sgt. Pepper...no wait

It is the 20th anniversary today of the worst snowstorm around here in my lifetime. A perfect s@#tstorm of Gulf moisture and a late season Atlantic Clipper. It started Friday evening with severe thunderstorms but by about 2 in the morning it turned to severe thunder snow. I've never seen that before or since.

By the time it was over we had 20" of snow on the ground with drifts up to 5' and a region paralyzed for the better part of a week, We were living in Chattanooga at the time and oddly never lost power, telephone, or cable service. The local TV channels kept encouraging us to prepare plenty of food while we still had power. I think I gained about 5 pounds over the weekend.

I'm particularly interested in the remembrances of you folks to the north and east and how it affected you - or even if it was nothing out of the ordinary.

Blizzard '93

I had to look that one up. I know where I was living (same place I am now), I know where I was working (same place I am now), but I can't remember that one having any major impact. I know in 1993 I was driving a 1992 Eagle Talon Turbo with AWD and I do recall a few heavy snow falls, why I can't remember a blizzard is beyond me.

Of course being close to the coast, we often get less snow than Worcester, MA (bolton blue country), so perhaps my area didn't get the snow other areas did. I do recall the April Fool's Blizzard in 1997. Again driving a Talon Turbo AWD (1997) that got me where I needed to be. That particular storm was a real kick in the A$$. We prefer to be done with blizzards by April.

We had close to 27" of snow here in Delaware, and I got to miss more than a week of work, due to the fact that the roof over our plant had sagged about 10" due to the snow load that it was not designed for. The Plant Engineering folks had to mobilize a team which included cranes, large buckets, snow blowers, and shovels to remove the snow from the roof before we could get back to work. We were really concerned about a roof collapse over the only production equipment of its kind in the world, which could have resulted in disaster for our company had the roof failed. I was living in an apartment at the time and my Mazda RX-7 was immovable for about 3 days. So, yes, I do remember that blizzard!

I will ALWAYS remember it well! I was on a 3 week trip to East Africa with my brother-in-law

My son was in high school and had a broken wrist. Kathy will NEVER let me forget that I was away when we had +24" of the white stuff...and she had no one else to help shovel This was before the real Internet....don't think there was even email

Heck, I DID call home a couple times and express my sympathies.... right after snorkeling in the Indian Ocean off Mombasa, Kenya....

OMG, I remember it well. We had almost 3 feet of the stuff and my house looked like a big snow bank. My front door had so much snow against it, I couldn't get it open. I went out the back and shoveled for hours to get around the house. It was a mess for a long time. We lost our power for a couple/days and had to rely on the fireplace for heat. Brrrrrr.
